Trim Up •Fitness Club for Women•

Step Class in 1995

It was 1987 when high impact, big hair, slouch socks and thong leotards were fitness fashion and I started a little aerobics studio in downtown Matthews. Being a busy mom with young children, as were most of the staff and many members, providing childcare onsite was essential and the part-time business was juggled with family responsibilities and activities. Over the next ten years, Trim Up established a following of women who appreciated our specialized program. All classes allowed participants to work at their own level. We had a great staff and a supportive, upbeat and fun atmosphere. However, we struggled with less than desirable site conditions at an old shopping center that eventually was torn down. It was sad to see the Trim Up era end.

Debi in 1995

As my life went in new directions, I was always in search of a place to work out that would be convenient for my work schedule, and offer classes challenging enough to keep me fit. I also wanted to find aerobic and step classes without mentally fatigueing complex choreography. I now related with women who faced the challenge of making time for exercise while managing career and home responsibilities. And later, I found with my kids growing up, I was losing contact with other moms through their school or sports. I missed the social aspect in my workout time. It was becoming increasingly difficult to stay motivated and consistent with exercise, which I needed more than ever with the changes my 40 something body was going through! With no luck in my search, and after talking to many women who felt the same way, I realized there was a real need for a quality, women-only fitness facility that could be like the old Trim Up but much more.

Women today have so many responsibilities with work, families, homes and activities! We need a place where we can work out anytime that our busy schedule allows, that is convenient and time efficient. We want a complete fitness program without the burden of deciding what to do, how to do it, and how to fit in. We need a place where a community of women can meet and take care of their health and fitness needs as well as their need for socialization.

It is my sincere hope that the new and improved Trim Up can be just what we need and will make a difference in the quality of our lives. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity and look forward to welcoming both old and new members to “The Club”!
